What this methodology does
OpenWall reviews two different questions: whether an image works as wallpaper, and whether OpenWall has a documented basis to host, transform, label and distribute it in the way shown. Passing one review does not imply passing the other.
A source label is metadata, not legal clearance. “Free”, “free to use”, “royalty-free”, “publisher media”, a search-results page or a platform-wide licence is not enough by itself to approve standalone wallpaper redistribution.
Content status
Each asset should fall into one of these operational states:
- OpenWall Original: produced for the collection using the creation method stated on its page, with production provenance and a completed visual and third-party-rights review. The OpenWall personal-use licence applies.
- Verified external work: exact creator, work page, licence/status, version, attribution, modifications and wallpaper-service redistribution basis are recorded. Only the uses supported by that record are offered.
- Source-only listing: OpenWall may provide commentary and a link but does not host or offer a file where redistribution permission has not been established.
- Quarantined or excluded: missing, conflicting or disputed provenance keeps the asset out of downloads, advertising surfaces and search indexing while it is reviewed.
An SEO priority, presence in a manifest, local file, attractive preview or previous publication is not a rights approval.
Required rights record
Before an asset becomes eligible for an OpenWall download, the internal record should contain:
- creator or generating route, exact work/file identifier and provenance;
- the original source page and exact licence, policy, permission or public-domain basis in force at review;
- whether that basis permits hosting, standalone redistribution, modification and use on a monetised wallpaper service;
- required attribution, licence links, notices and ShareAlike treatment;
- all changes OpenWall made, including crop, resize, upscaling, compression, colour adjustment and format conversion;
- the delivered file's verified dimensions, format and relationship to the source file; and
- review date, reviewer, evidence location and an explicit approval state.
Where a platform's terms distinguish ordinary use from building a wallpaper or competing image service, the more specific service restriction controls OpenWall's distribution decision. Written permission must cover OpenWall's actual use; attribution alone does not cure a prohibited use.
Creative Commons and public-domain material
For Creative Commons works, OpenWall records the named creator, exact work URL, exact licence/version link, credit wording and changes made. Licence conditions such as Attribution, ShareAlike, NonCommercial or NoDerivatives are applied to the actual delivered file and page, not reduced to a generic “CC” label.
For public-domain or government material, OpenWall records the specific status and source. Copyright status does not decide separate restrictions involving official logos, endorsement, privacy, personality, property or trademarks.
Brands, entertainment and publisher media
A press kit, game publisher page, fan-content policy or brand gallery is reviewed for permission covering downloadable wallpaper redistribution and monetised presentation. Editorial identification of a vehicle, game or brand does not grant the right to distribute its artwork, logos or characters. Unclear cases remain source-only or are removed.
Creation methods for OpenWall Originals
The collection includes AI-generated or AI-assisted raster artwork and code-generated vector designs. Each released item carries an explicit creation-method and provenance state. AI-assisted items may be edited after generation and are labelled accordingly; “Original” is the collection name and does not mean a photograph, a unique result or guaranteed copyright in every element.
The review checks for obvious signatures and watermarks, recognisable real people, protected characters, logos, trade dress, implausible details and confusing similarity. Generation provenance, relevant provider terms and human changes should be retained. Passing this review reduces risk but is not a guarantee that no third-party claim is possible.
OpenWall Originals are offered under the non-exclusive personal wallpaper licence in the Terms of Use. Commercial, client, merchandise, redistribution, stock, public-upload and model-training uses are not included.
Resolution and file terminology
- Native 4K: the delivered landscape file is at least 3840 by 2160 pixels, or the portrait file is at least 2160 by 3840 pixels, and it was not merely enlarged from a smaller supplied image.
- 4K-sized export: the output canvas has 4K pixel dimensions but may contain upscaled or fitted source detail. It is labelled as an export, not native 4K.
- Original file: the verified, unmodified source file. A smaller CDN rendition, recompressed copy, crop or canvas export is not called the original.
Displayed dimensions are taken from the file actually offered, not copied from source-page metadata for a different rendition. File size is measured from the delivered file rather than estimated. If those facts are not verified, the claim is omitted.
Wallpaper curation
After rights eligibility is determined, OpenWall considers composition, clarity, crop flexibility, quiet space for icons, contrast, likely desktop or phone fit, repetition and file quality. These are editorial judgements about usefulness as a background, not claims about popularity or legal status.
Recommendations use catalogue categories, visual tags, mood, device fit and, where the visitor requests it, that browser's saved items. They are not presented as personalised advice or as evidence that other users chose the image.
Scores, selections and popularity
A “screen-fit score”, if shown, is an editorial or catalogue-derived assessment and must be labelled as such. It is not a customer star rating. The contributing factors and scale must be published wherever the score could otherwise be mistaken for user opinion.
Manually selected collections are labelled “Editor's picks”, “Featured” or similarly. They are not called “trending”, “most downloaded”, “popular now” or “most used” unless real, current and auditable visitor data supports the exact claim and timeframe. OpenWall does not show invented ratings or download counts. Optional analytics is currently disabled.
Indexing and advertising gates
An asset lacking explicit provenance and rights approval is excluded from indexing, downloadable routes and advertising surfaces. Noindex is a discovery control, not permission to keep infringing or misleading content available. A disputed or prohibited file is disabled or removed rather than merely hidden from search.
Indexable pages need a specific title, useful description, verified delivered-file facts, content status, creator/source/AI information, applicable licence link and modification disclosure. Thin tag variants and unsupported claim pages are consolidated or excluded.
Corrections and ongoing review
Provider terms, source metadata and rights information can change. OpenWall rechecks affected records after a provider-policy change, complaint, takedown request, new monetisation method, file replacement or material transformation. A review date does not make the record permanent.
Report a source, attribution, rights, AI, resolution or score problem through the Contact page. Include the exact OpenWall page and evidence for the correction. A credible rights dispute can trigger temporary disablement while it is investigated.
